What is the difference between artificial, natural and synthetic sweeteners?

Images of the natural sweetener stevia and stevia extract Hello! This is Fusubon Kawatani. Today, I will explain the differences between artificial, synthetic, and natural sweeteners. I didn't really understand the difference between synthetic and artificial sweeteners before, so I've put together a simple summary for you here.

What are sweeteners?

Simply put, a sweetener is a seasoning that adds sweetness. Sugar and glucose, which have been familiar to us for a long time, are considered foods, while other sweeteners are classified as food additives under the Food Sanitation Act.

Sweeteners can be divided into artificial and natural sweeteners.

The former are things that humans have synthesized that do not exist in nature, while the latter are things that exist in nature either as is or synthesized. This may seem a bit odd to many people. Even though the term "natural sweetener" includes the word "natural," if it exists in nature it is classified as a natural sweetener, even if it is synthetic. In my opinion, if it is naturally occurring, there is no problem with synthetically produced materials. On the other hand, I believe that we should avoid consuming synthetic artificial sweeteners, which are not found in nature, as much as possible. For this reason, Fusubon only uses natural sweeteners.

What are artificial sweeteners?

Sweeteners made synthetically are called synthetic sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are the only type of sweetener available. Natural sweeteners include synthetic sweeteners and non-synthetic sweeteners (those that do not have a specific name). Natural sweeteners that are not synthetic are those that are made by refining and concentrating the natural sweetness extracted from food. It is a natural sweetener that uses the sweetness naturally contained in foods such as sugar cane, maple syrup, and honey. It sounds like it would be good for your body, but you need to be careful as it is high in carbohydrates.

summary

What did you think? Many people probably think that all synthetic sweeteners are artificial sweeteners. I don't think artificial sweeteners are that bad compared to sugar, which has a lot of carbohydrates, but if possible, it's best to choose natural sweeteners that don't result in carbohydrates being metabolized.
